Filters
Regularly change the filters on your furnace. Professional HVAC heating, venting, and air conditioning service technicians recommend changing filters monthly.
If your furnace can use a washable filter, you'll save money by using them. You can also save some money by buying your standard filters in bulk.
Conditions that might necessitate changing filters more often include any time you have a high volume of foot traffic (when doors will be opened often) and pet dander (which can clog furnace filters).
Vacuum and Wipe Down
Another way to lengthen the life of your furnace is to clean it. Use a shop vacuum that is in good working order; the last thing you want is to leak more debris back into the furnace.
Replace Insulation
If your furnace has insulation around or inside the door, examine it for brittleness or missing pieces. The fan could pull in loose isulation, which can clog the furnace and burn up the motor.
Inspect Wiring
Go outside and look at the wiring that connects your outside cooling and heating fan to see if wires are frayed or loose. Clean away debris from around the fan, and if possible, wash the unit with a mild detergent. Pull any leaves or garbage out of the grill of the fan, so it can run with maximum efficiency.
Clean Vents Inside and Out
Clean out your floor vents. Also look outside and check your duct work to make sure that it hasn't fallen or become tangled. If anything is clogging or obstructing the air flow, you will run the unit harder to stay cool or warm, which shortens the life of your furnace.
Furnace Inspection
Schedule a yearly inspection of your furnace.
